Checkers Day

Celebrate Checkers Day! Surprisingly, Checkers Day (also known as Dogs in Politics Day) is not named for the classic game.
On September 23, 1952, vice presidential candidate Richard Nixon gave a speech to address growing public concern about his use of campaign funds. He assured the public that he had not misused the funds, but that he intended to keep one gift—a little dog that the Nixon children named Checkers. The “Checkers speech” was a political triumph and the public responded with overwhelming support.
In honor of this day, challenge a friend to a game of checkers!

National White Chocolate Day

It’s National White Chocolate Day! White chocolate was invented by the NestlĂ© company in Switzerland. The first white chocolate bar debuted in 1930.
Despite its long history, for many years the confection we know as “white chocolate” was not officially chocolate at all. White chocolate does not contain cocoa solids—one of the main ingredients in traditional chocolate. In 2004, ten years after chocolate manufacturers filed the first petition, the FDA finally relaxed its definition of “chocolate” and accepted white chocolate into the family. According to the regulations, true white chocolate must contain at least 20% cocoa butter, 14% total milk solids, 3.5% milk fat, and less than 63% sugar.
Pick up a scrumptious white chocolate truffle or a package of white chocolate covered pretzels to celebrate!

Reflections on Life
"I wanted a perfect ending...Now I’ve learned the hard way that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity."

It’s Time to be There for Grandparents Who Need You

Grandparents are beyond special and it goes without saying that we are lucky to have them. While we all appreciate our grandparents and all they do for us, we might not always know how to show it. Thanks to President Jimmy Carter in 1978, National Grandparents Day was declared officially as the Sunday after Labor Day. It’s a chance for us to collectively show our love and appreciation for those who do so much.
Rather than just buy a card or send flowers, look into doing something that can really make a difference in your grandparent’s lives. If you look on the Red Cross website, there are plenty of interesting and unique ideas about things you can easily do to show them you care. For instance, many grandparents may not think too much about home safety issues. They may cling to a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude. However, your grandparents may be holding on to appliances that are unsafe, electrical issues they may ignore and other safety problems that someone should fix for them. Grandparents may not always be aware that something in their home is even dangerous at all. Updating anything that may help you and them sleep better at night is so much more important than a card.
Maybe you could even look into helping them fix up a spare room or helping them get a remodeling job done that may have been on their to-do list for quite some time. Just being there and helping in some small way will mean so much to grandparents who are all too often overlooked.

National Blueberry Popsicle Day

Blueberry popsicles are delightful summer treats. That’s why we’re glad today is National Blueberry Popsicle Day!
Popsicles were invented in 1905 by eleven-year-old Frank Epperson. He accidentally left a stirring stick in a fruit-flavored drink on his porch one winter night. In the morning, it was frozen solid and the icy treat we know and love was first created. He first named this delight the "Epsicle.” This name was changed eighteen years later.
By 1965, 34 different flavors of popsicles were being produced, including blueberry. To celebrate National Blueberry Popsicle Day, purchase a pack of blueberry popsicles or make your own.

Reflections on Life
"Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such."
