National Corn Fritters Day

It’s National Corn Fritters Day! Corn fritters are savory bites of fried or baked corn batter—a mixture made with corn, egg, flour, milk, and melted butter. These treats can be eaten alone, served as a side, or enjoyed with a topping like syrup, powdered sugar, or jam.
Although corn fritters originated in the South, many other cultures have come up with similar dishes. For example, in Asia “pakoras” are a popular snack. This dish is made with vegetables dipped in batter that are then deep-fried.
To celebrate National Corn Fritters Day, head to your local Southern-style restaurant or grab your frying pan to cook up some homemade fritters!

Reflections on Life"It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for."

Sunglasses Day

It’s Sunglasses Day! Sunglasses are quite possibly the most important fashion accessory of the entire summer season. Humans have been wearing protective eyewear for centuries, but the stylish designs we’re accustomed to today are a much more recent invention.
During the prehistoric era, the Inuit people used walrus ivory to create sun goggles, which blocked out the powerful rays of sun that reflected off the snow and ice. By the 1700s, doctors were regularly prescribing tinted glasses for vision correction, and by the 1930s the Foster Grant company was selling modern-day sunglasses on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey. On the eve of World War II, a little company called Ray Ban began producing anti-glare sunglasses for pilots. “Aviators” became the first commercially successful sunglasses.
To celebrate Sunglasses Day, sport your favorite shades all day long!

Reflections on Life"Hell begins on the day when God grants us a clear vision of all that we might have achieved, of all the gifts which we have wasted, of all that we might have done which we did not do. For me the conception of Hell lies in two words: 'too late.'”

It’s Time to be There for Grandparents Who Need You

Grandparents are beyond special and it goes without saying that we are lucky to have them. While we all appreciate our grandparents and all they do for us, we might not always know how to show it. Thanks to President Jimmy Carter in 1978, National Grandparents Day was declared officially as the Sunday after Labor Day. It’s a chance for us to collectively show our love and appreciation for those who do so much.
Rather than just buy a card or send flowers, look into doing something that can really make a difference in your grandparent’s lives. If you look on the Red Cross website, there are plenty of interesting and unique ideas about things you can easily do to show them you care. For instance, many grandparents may not think too much about home safety issues. They may cling to a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude. However, your grandparents may be holding on to appliances that are unsafe, electrical issues they may ignore and other safety problems that someone should fix for them. Grandparents may not always be aware that something in their home is even dangerous at all. Updating anything that may help you and them sleep better at night is so much more important than a card.
Maybe you could even look into helping them fix up a spare room or helping them get a remodeling job done that may have been on their to-do list for quite some time. Just being there and helping in some small way will mean so much to grandparents who are all too often overlooked.
