Daily Challenge

TOPIC: Find the sodium (salt) content in 3 foods.

How to do it
Go into your kitchen and look in your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. Pick out three packaged foods that you like to eat (cottage cheese, frozen pizza, pasta sauce, soup, or English muffins, for example). Find the nutrition facts labels to see the salt content for a single serving of each. It will be listed as "sodium." How many milligrams does a single serving of each food include?

Why it matters
The human body needs some sodium to function properly. But we tend to get much more salt than we need in our diets, mainly because so many of the processed and prepared foods we eat are loaded with salt. Consuming too much sodium increases your risk for high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attack and stroke. It's recommended that most adults consume less than 2,300 milligrams (about 1 teaspoon) of sodium a day.
