National Rice Pudding Day

It’s National Rice Pudding Day! Rice pudding is a delicious treat that combines the smooth, creamy texture of pudding with nutritious and filling rice. The recipe evolved from an ancient dish known as “pottage,” which originated in the Middle East.
Almost every region of the world has its own take on rice pudding. Some versions are sweet while others are savory, and some are thick while others are thin. In the United States, most people serve their rice pudding sweetened with a sprinkle of nutmeg and raisins. Yum!
Enjoy some rice pudding today in honor of National Rice Pudding Day!

Today is...

National Zucchini Day

It’s National Zucchini Day! Today we celebrate this versatile green vegetable and all the delicious dishes we can make with it.
The common zucchini is a close relative of the cucumber and the melon. It is a type of squash that comes from Italy. In fact, the name “zucchini” comes from the word “zucchino,” which means “small squash” in Italian. The largest zucchini on record was 69.5 inches long and weighed 65 pounds! It probably wouldn’t have tasted very good though. For the best flavor, always choose a small or medium sized zucchini.
To celebrate National Zucchini Day, plan a dinner menu full of this healthy vegetable! Grill it, bake it into bread, or add it to a salad. Bon appétit!

Today is...

National Lighthouse Day

Today is National Lighthouse Day! On this day in 1789, the United States Congress approved an Act “for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.” This piece of legislation commissioned the first Federal lighthouse, which was constructed at the entrance of Chesapeake Bay. Two hundred years later, Congress designated August 7th as National Lighthouse Day to commemorate this important moment in history and to celebrate these beautiful structures.
For centuries, lighthouses have served as beacons of light, guiding ships safely to harbor through storms, fog, or dark of night. To celebrate National Lighthouse Day, visit a local lighthouse near you or donate to a lighthouse preservation society.

Reflections on Life"This is my 'depressed stance.' When you’re depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel better. If you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve got to stand like this."

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

It’s National Ice Cream Sandwich Day! On the beach or in an ice cream shop, these sweet sandwiches are always delicious.
Ice cream sandwiches come in many varieties. In their traditional form, vanilla ice cream is tucked between two thin layers that resemble chocolate cake. Other versions include chipwiches—ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.
Variations of this delight can also be found in different countries. In Australia, the most popular sandwiches are called “Giant Sandwiches," while "Maxibons" are half-dipped in chocolate. However, the most exotic ice cream sandwiches might be found in Singapore. Here, red bean, yam, and honeydew are all popular flavors.
