National Greasy Foods Day

Though it is not the healthiest, Americans certainly do love the taste of greasy food. Predominately found in fast food restaurant chains, greasy food can also be found in other types of restaurants as well. From pizza and nachos to burgers and french fries, it's nearly impossible to not see some form of a greasy food on any American menu.
Did you know that fried chicken is the most ordered meal in sit-down restaurants in the U.S.? Greasy foods can be pan-fried, deep fried, or baked. To celebrate National Greasy Food Day, allow yourself to indulge in a little greasy food...even if it's just for today.

It is the perfect way to end any meal! Pumpkin cheesecake is commonly made with a graham cracker crust and a pumpkin puree flavored cheesecake filling on top.

Did you know that the first cheesecake dates back to as far as 2,000 B.C. in Greece? Thousands of years later, cheesecakes began appearing in America in recipes brought over by immigrants. Today pumpkin cheesecake is a worldwide favorite variation on the original cheesecake recipe. Enjoy a slice on National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day!

National Seafood Bisque Day

Seafood bisque is a delightful type of French soup composed of lobster, crab, shrimp, and crayfish. Some culinary historians believed that the word bisque is derived from the fact that this type of soup is cooked not once, but twice.
Others believe that the origin of this word relates to the Bay of Biscay. No matter what the origin is, seafood bisque is a fabulous dish that is a close relative to another type of soup, chowder.

To celebrate National Seafood Bisque Day, try your hand at making your own. Lightly sauteé the crustaceans in their shells, then simmer them in wine. Once cooked, purée the seafood in a food processor. Then add cream to the mixture to thicken the soup to your desired consistency. After that, just add a spring of parsley and it is ready to be served!

National Pasta Day

Linguine, fettuccine, spaghetti, tortellini, ziti, the list of different types of pastas is endless!  Pasta is typically thought of to be an Italian dish, originating thousands of years ago, though evidence of noodles made of millet have been found in China from 2000 B.C.

Did you know that a typical Italian person eats over 60 pounds of pasta a year? This amount beats out Americans by a long shot, who eat only 20 pounds of pasta per person per year. Pasta can be made dry (pasta secca) or fresh (pasta fresca). There are over 350 varieties of dried pasta in Italy. In order to ensure the highest quality of dried pasta, Italians agree that it must be made with pure durum semolina flour and water. Fresh pasta can be made with slightly different ingredients than the dried variety of pasta depending on where you are.

To celebrate today, forget about your no-carb diet and enjoy a delightful dish of your favorite type of pasta cooked your favorite way.

National Boss's Day

Got a fantastic boss? On Boss's Day, show your appreciation to them today for being kind, fair, and understanding.
The origin of Boss's Day dates back to 1958 when State Farm Insurance employee Patricia Bays Haroski registered the date with the government. Haroski chose the date because it was her father's birthday who, coincidentally, was also her boss! She wanted to honor her father who had given her and her siblings great advice throughout their careers.
Not sure how to celebrate? Send an ecard, give flowers, or take your boss to lunch. Whatever you do will surely be appreciated!

National Chocolate-Covered Insects Day

Chocolate is one of the most popular flavors in the world and people will try it on anything -- strawberries, pretzels, peanuts, even bugs! This holiday honors anyone brave enough to try one.
The insects are roasted to perfection, then coated in chocolate. Most people think they even taste like chocolate covered popcorn.
In some countries, like China and Thailand, chocolate-covered insects are a delicacy. In Africa, caterpillars are an important factor in many people's diets and they eat them plain -- without the chocolate!
Test your bravery on National Chocolate-Covered Insects Day by inviting friends over for your own fear factor party to try some chocolate covered insects (you'd be surprised about the selection of chocolate-covered insects available online)!

National Gumbo Day

Gumbo is a tasty stew-like dish originating in New Orleans that consists of meat or seafood, celery, bell peppers, and onions. The key ingredient of gumbo is okra, from the African word which the dish gets its name. The thickness of gumbo can be altered by adding roux, a mixture of wheat flour and fat. Gumbo has been called "Louisiana's greatest contribution to American cuisine" on more than one occasion. It's origin began sometime around the 1800's, and it's popularity has since flourished across the Gulf Coast and the rest of the United States.

There are typically two types of gumbo recipes that are made: Creole and Cajun style gumbo. Creole gumbo uses a lighter roux and also includes tomatoes, an influence made by Italian immigrants who moved to the city. Cajun style gumbo on the other hand is made with a darker roux and never contains tomatoes. On National Gumbo Day, be sure to enjoy Louisiana's most famous dish served over brown or white rice.

Columbus Day

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. While trying to find a shorter route to Asia, Christopher Columbus accidently landed in the Americas. Following his discovery of this New World, Columbus led the world into an era of exploration.
The first celebration for his discoveries did not actually take place though until October 12, 1792, three hundred years after his landing in America. In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day as a national holiday.
Today is a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge about Columbus and commemorate his voyage to the New World. Do some arts and crafts, read a book, or just enjoy your day off in celebration of Christopher Columbus!

Mad Hatter Day

Relive your childhood today and celebrate Mad Hatter Day! The Mad Hatter is a famous character in Lewis Caroll's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
The first Mad Hatter Day was celebrated in Boulder, Colorado by a group of computer technicians in 1986. The workers decided to initiate the first official Mad Hatter Day as a day of silliness. The date for this holiday was chosen because the Mad Hatter is always seen wearing a top hat labeled "In this style 10/6" in the book's illustrations.
Today, the nonsense we usually have to pretend is sane can finally be called madness, and silliness can be made sane. So go ahead, grab yourself a top hat and have yourself a very silly Mad Hatter's Day!

National Apple Betty Day

An apple brown betty is a traditional American dessert made of apples baked between layers of sweetened bread crumbs.
The recipe dates back to Colonial times. In fact, it first appeared in print in 1864 in an article in the Yale Literary Magazine. It was a very popular dish back then because it was quick and easy to make and could even be made on the trail while people were traveling in their covered wagons.
Though nobody knows who Betty really is, her apple brown betty desserts have been a longtime favorite dessert. In honor of National Apple Betty Day, try making your own topped with lemon sauce, ice cream, or whip cream. Yum!
