International Men's Day

Today is International Men's Day! This holiday focuses on improving men's health, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.
The establishment of International Men's Day has been in the works since at least the 1960's. Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh of the University of West Indies realized the importance of male role models in society and he began promoting the event. He finally received written support from United Nations officials a little over a decade ago and it was observed for the first time on November 19, 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago. The date was originally chosen because it is the birthday of Dr. Teelucksingh's father, a major role model in his life. Since it's origin, many other countries have joined in its efforts including Jamaica, Australia, India, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
Celebrations of International Men's Day include marches, debates, panel discussions, public seminars, art displays, and much more. Each year typically has a theme associated with it. To learn more about this holiday and events going on in your area, check out the official website.

"Do not be interested in the quantity of people who respect and admire you, but in their quality. If bad people dislike you, so much the better."
