National Greasy Foods Day

Though it is not the healthiest, Americans certainly do love the taste of greasy food. Predominately found in fast food restaurant chains, greasy food can also be found in other types of restaurants as well. From pizza and nachos to burgers and french fries, it's nearly impossible to not see some form of a greasy food on any American menu. 

Did you know that fried chicken is the most ordered meal in sit-down restaurants in the U.S.? Greasy foods can be pan-fried, deep fried, or baked. To celebrate National Greasy Food Day, allow yourself to indulge in a little greasy food...even if it's just for today.

National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day

It seems that during the fall, anything and everything can be pumpkin flavored: pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin beer,  pumpkin coffee, pumpkin bread, and of course, pumpkin cheesecake. It is the perfect way to end any meal! Pumpkin cheesecake is commonly made with a graham cracker crust and a pumpkin puree flavored cheesecake filling on top.

National Seafood Bisque Day

Seafood bisque is a delightful type of French soup composed of lobster, crab, shrimp, and crayfish. Some culinary historians believed that the word bisque is derived from the fact that this type of soup is cooked not once, but twice.

Others believe that the origin of this word relates to the Bay of Biscay. No matter what the origin is, seafood bisque is a fabulous dish that is a close relative to another type of soup, chowder.

To celebrate National Seafood Bisque Day, try your hand at making your own. Lightly sauteé the crustaceans in their shells, then simmer them in wine. Once cooked, purée the seafood in a food processor. Then add cream to the mixture to thicken the soup to your desired consistency. After that, just add a spring of parsley and it is ready to be served!

National Pasta Day

Linguine, fettuccine, spaghetti, tortellini, ziti, the list of different types of pastas is endless!  Pasta is typically thought of to be an Italian dish, originating thousands of years ago, though evidence of noodles made of millet have been found in China from 2000 B.C.

Did you know that a typical Italian person eats over 60 pounds of pasta a year? This amount beats out Americans by a long shot, who eat only 20 pounds of pasta per person per year. Pasta can be made dry (pasta secca) or fresh (pasta fresca). There are over 350 varieties of dried pasta in Italy. In order to ensure the highest quality of dried pasta, Italians agree that it must be made with pure durum semolina flour and water. Fresh pasta can be made with slightly different ingredients than the dried variety of pasta depending on where you are.

To celebrate today, forget about your no-carb diet and enjoy a delightful dish of your favorite type of pasta cooked your favorite way.

The origin of Boss's Day dates back to 1958 when State Farm Insurance employee Patricia Bays Haroski registered the date with the government. Haroski chose the date because it was her father's birthday who, coincidentally, was also her boss!
