Today is...
Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day!
Waffles became a popular baked treat during the Middle Ages. The original recipe called for just flour and water, so vendors sold waffles on the streets during the religious fasting season. Bakers branded the waffles with coats of arms, religious symbols, and the traditional honeycomb pattern we are accustomed to today. Eventually people began adding other ingredients like eggs, butter, milk, and honey.
Looking for a healthier version of this breakfast classic? Make a delicious batch of oatmeal nut waffles with nutritious whole grain oats and chopped pecans mixed right into the batter. Top your oatmeal waffles with peanut butter and syrup, or pair with yogurt and honey for a complete breakfast. Happy Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day!

Today is...
International Day of Awesomeness!
This day gives us the opportunity to celebrate every person, place, thing, or idea in the world that is awesome. As the official tag line points out, “No one’s perfect, but everyone can be awesome.”
A man named Kevin Lawver declared the need for an International Day of Awesomeness in 2007. He was working with an intern named Freddie Maneiro who suggested that the office should celebrate Lawver’s awesomeness. Lawver replied that there should be an International Day of Awesomeness. He posted the idea to Twitter and the rest is history.
The International Day of Awesomeness occurs every year on March 10th, which also happens to be Chuck Norris’ birthday. To celebrate the occasion, check out the official website for this holiday, organize a group of friends and perform feats of awesomeness, and have an awesome day!

Today is...
National Cereal Day!
Cereal is the most popular breakfast food in America, but that wasn’t always the case. Up until the 1860s, most people ate eggs, bacon, and sausage every morning. Cereal emerged as a healthier alternative at the end of the 19th century.
The invention of one of the most famous brands of cereal was an accident. In 1877, two brothers named John Harvey Kellogg and Will Keith Kellogg were experimenting with food made with boiled wheat. They left a batch out overnight and returned to find it stale. Instead of throwing it away, they rolled it out and discovered that each wheat berry formed its own flake. They tried the same process with corn, and created the first dry breakfast cereal, which we now know as Kellogg’s Corn Flakes!
Today, 49% of Americans start their day with a bowl of cereal. Wholegrain cereals are an excellent source of fiber, iron, and B vitamins. Celebrate National Cereal Day with a bowlful of your favorite brand!

Today is...
National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day!

A Greek writer named Athenaeus recorded the oldest surviving cheesecake recipe. The ancient dessert called for just three ingredients—cheese, honey, and flour. Despite its simplicity, the Greeks believed that cheesecake had special powers. Brides and grooms ate it as wedding cake, and athletes enjoyed it before the first Olympic games in 776 BC!
The cheesecake we know and love today relies heavily on cream cheese, which wasn’t invented until the 1870s. By the early 1900s, cheesecake appeared on almost every restaurant menu in New York City and soon became a nationwide sensation. People love to experiment with interesting cheesecake flavors like piña colada, turtle, pumpkin pecan, crème brûlée, red velvet, and today's reason to celebrate, white chocolate.
To celebrate National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day, bake a delicious white chocolate cheesecake or pick one up from your local bakery!

Today is...
National Cheese Doodle Day!
Cheese doodles are a snack food made with cornmeal that has been puffed, baked, and coated with cheddar cheese. Morrie Yohai invented the cheese doodle in the 1940s. After serving as a Marine in World War II, he returned to his home in the Bronx and took over the family business—a snack food company called Old London Foods.
During the 1960s, Wise Foods, Inc. acquired the company and cheese doodles became part of the potato chip division. Today, cheese doodles are one of Wise's strongest brands. The company produces over 15 million pounds of cheese doodles each year. That’s enough to fill 36 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
To celebrate National Cheese Doodle Day, pick up a bag of cheese doodles to share with friends!

Today is...
Mardi Gras!

Mardi Gras (also known as Fat Tuesday) is the last day of the Carnival season—a period of raucous merry-making in the weeks leading up to Lent. In countries all across the world, people will celebrate with extravagant festivals, parades, and feasts. They will don costumes, dance in the streets, and binge on decadent desserts.
The two most famous Mardi Gras celebrations take place in Venice, Italy and New Orleans, Louisiana. At the Carnevale di Venezia the most important event is the contest for the best mask, which is judged by a panel of international fashion designers. In New Orleans, the festivities revolve around the Mardi Gras parades, which are organized by secret societies known as “krewes.” The members of these societies design the elaborate floats and ride them during the event, tossing beads to the crowd below.
To celebrate Mardi Gras, enjoy some delicious king cake, send a free Mardi Gras eCard, or don an exotic Venetian Mardi Gras mask! Joie de vivre!

Today is...
National Anthem Day!
In 1814, a young lawyer named Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called “Defence of Fort McHenry.” Key penned the verses after witnessing the British attack on Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812. The sight of the American flag flying triumphantly over Fort McHenry in the morning inspired his legendary words.
Key decided to set his piece to music, and borrowed the tune from a popular song called “To Anacreon in Heaven.” Not long after it was first published, people began referring to the piece as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The song became an overnight success, and bands began playing it during public events and military occasions. In March of 1931, over a hundred years after Key wrote it, “The Star-Spangled Banner” became the official national anthem of the United States.
Do you know all of the words to the national anthem (including verses two, three, and four)? Today's a great day to refresh your memory. Happy National Anthem Day!
